Putting Waste Materials to Wood Work
Select Timber & MDF Products continuously review and improve our waste management systems as part of our corporate social responsibility. In addition to this we regularly donate timber offcuts to the Sleaford Learning Disabilities Team.
Advocate and Voluntary Support Worker for Sleaford Learning Disabilities, Pete Smith says, “It is so important to receive these donations as it ensures that the woodworking classes continue to run, as they rely on donations. These classes give the team experience in working with various tools and it also encourages them to pursue new ideas. There is always a lot of excitement at the Sleaford centre when word gets out that Select Timber have donated some more wood.”
The team use the timber offcuts to produce a range of products in their woodwork classes. Products include bird houses, herb boxes and rabbit hutches, with their latest project being a large wheel barrow which will be used to transport their home grown produce to a location in Sleaford, where they hope to sell it.
Pete Smith continues, “The items the team make are often offered for resale to enable them to raise funds towards occasional outings which they so look forward to. I would like to express my sincere thanks and appreciation for the wood donations. It has made a big difference to the daily lives of many vulnerable people.”
Managing Director David West said, “Waste management is an essential part of our company policies. We strive to ensure that any waste produced by our daily operations is minimal and we have several benchmarks in place to achieve this. Being able to combine this with helping an organisation such as the Sleaford Learning Disabilities Team is of mutual benefit. Here at Select Timber & MDF Products we are very pleased to be able to help vulnerable adults improve their skills and broaden their experience in this way.”
